KETTLEBELL SWING

The Kettlebell swing is a fundamental strength movement. The exercise itself is actually quite simple, but its the speed, rhythm and dynamic nature of the swing that makes it tricky.

Its a hinge (where you fold at the hip, keep your back straight and put minim al bend in your knees- it isn’t a squat!) - it looks like this…

But done with some oomph! In order to get that kettlebell to shift. It looks like this!

Here’s why its worth your while…

POSTERIOR POWER

The primary muscles that get worked fall into a grouping called ‘The Posterior Chain’ - Largely the Lower Back, Glutes and Hamstrings. In other words the back of your body. When these muscles work together they can be incredibly powerful and highly functional in sport and everyday life. Sadly, thanks to sitting, they are often left underworked and weaker than other muscles in the body. This often results in the ‘tweaked hamstring’ and ‘lower back pain’ we so often see. Get them strong, and it’s a different story!

SKILL

The kettlebell flies up because of your hips - not because of your arms (which act more as a guide) Building that connection is tricky and requires a good amount of skill and timing - this comes with practice. Allow yourself to get lost in the movement and work on a mindful exercise that requires more than body!

CROSS OVER

The strength developed in a kettlebell swing, crosses over into pretty much any movement that requires your posterior chain/hips. Deadlifting, Olympic lifting, Sandbags, Jumping, Kicking etc - Not to mention the swing itself is the crux of many other kettlebell movements such as cleans and snatches, allowing you to build flowing routines that create a huge demand on any body!

VERSATILE

Want to burn calories, do lighter swings for more reps - Want to build explosive strength, get a heavier kettlebell for fewer reps. Most goals will welcome a swing!
